Interviews, podcasts, and radio

Across radio, podcasts and video events, I have extensive experience of live and pre-recorded broadcasting on a range of platforms. Able to learn new skills quickly, I am an adaptable presenter and producer who loves showcasing other peoples’ talent and expertise through interviews and broadcasts. I have project-managed multiple podcasts from concept to launch, using both Acast and Anchor for podcast distribution. I am a self-taught audio editor, confident with Adobe Audition and Descript, and always run the technical side of my radio shows alongside presenting. Please have a browse of my broadcasting experience, and use my contact page to get in touch about any potential podcast or radio projects.

Interviews

Interview with Mark Kermode for RAW 1251 AM

As an Arts presenter on the University of Warwick’s student radio station, RAW 1251 AM, I had the privilege of interviewing film critic and broadcaster Mark Kermode about his career and lifelong love of music. Alongside discussing his book, How Does It Feel? A Life of Musical Misadventures, we also chatted about music in film, from musicals like Mamma Mia to Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver. For this interview, I was awarded Silver: Best Interview at the 2019 RAWards.

Cicerone Live

While at Cicerone Press, I co-ordinated and hosted 18 online events, speaking to a range of guests including Raynor Winn, Paul Rose, and many Cicerone authors. Using StreamYard as a platform, the events were streamed live to Facebook, YouTube and the Cicerone website, and regularly attracted audiences of over 100 people. I prepared tailored questions for each event before facilitating a Q&A section for the audience. My discussion with Raynor Winn and Paddy Dillon about The Salt Path in relation to the South West Coast Path and The Wild Silence in relation to trekking in Iceland was a particular highlight, and is available to watch below.

Unlatched Podcast

Unlatched Podcast was a project run by Amy Hodkin and Jessica Kashdan-Brown between May 2020 and May 2021. Set up as a response to the COVID pandemic, the podcast aimed to replicate the open mic space by creating a place for writers and musicians to share their work. By inviting contributors to submit audio recordings of spoken word performances, and showcasing new musical projects by interviewing musicians, we fostered a community of creatives and listeners across the world.

Started as a solo project, I initially recorded, edited and released each episode independently, alongside running the social media to find listeners and submissions. After Episode 4, I was delighted to be joined by Jessica Kashdan-Brown as my co-host and co-producer.

For a flavour of our project, here is Episode 7: our Class of 2020 Special. This episode centred on students who were graduating from university and college, allowing us to showcase and celebrate their achievements during a really difficult year. You can find all the episodes of Unlatched Podcast on podcast streaming sites/apps including Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Footnotes: The Cicerone Podcast

(From the Cicerone website) Footnotes: The Cicerone Podcast is a podcast to inspire you about outdoor travel and activities in the UK and across the world. Through conversations with our guidebook authors, team members and other outdoor experts, this podcast offers plenty of inspiration and advice about exploring the outdoors. Whether you’re an established long distance-trekker or have just rediscovered a love of walking or cycling, listen in to discover your next outdoor adventure.

While working at Cicerone Press, I was the creator, co-ordinator, producer, editor and co-host of Footnotes: The Cicerone Podcast. Launched in October 2020, this fortnightly podcast achieved over 10,000 downloads within 5 months and proved popular with both new and established customers. Based on our success, we were contacted by StudioCanal to interview director/writer Harry Macqueen and cinematographer Dick Pope about their 2020 feature film Supernova. Ultimately, I produced the first 25 episodes of Footnotes, creating a strong foundation and process for the podcast to continue.

An Incomplete History of Inventions

Hosted by Kathryn Llewellyn, Charlotte Tonks and Amy Hodkin, An Incomplete History of Inventions was a highly-speculative comedy podcast where we tried to figure out why everyday objects were invented. Every episode, we each chose a different item and discussed its uses, history, and creators. From coasters to contact lenses, shower curtains to shoelaces, we delved deep into the practicality and psychology of why things came to be, and tried to put ourselves in the minds of inventors in the past.

Following the realisation that all the objects we had discussed in our first three episodes were credited to men, we wanted to rebalance this by raising awareness of female inventors. For International Women’s Day, we produced a special episode about female inventors and their innovations.

At the University of Warwick, I was heavily involved in student radio on RAW 1251AM. I presented multiple radio shows over the course of three years, including a film and student theatre review show, an interview show about creativity, and a light entertainment show. I also conducted pre-recorded interviews with both students and professionals, including with film critic Mark Kermode. As a key member of the RAW Arts team, I was a regular panelist of the weekly Arts show, Articulate, and was promoted to Deputy Head of Arts in my final year.

Two Broke Reviewers – film and theatre review show

In this fortnightly film and student theatre review show hosted by myself and Guy Jack, we reviewed latest film releases and interviewed directors, actors, and producers involved in student theatre. In this sample episode, we reviewed the play ‘Rhinoceros’, films ‘Detroit’ and ‘IT: Chapter 1’, and interviewed director Kathryn Llewellyn and actor Jessie Kolvin about their production of ‘The Tamer Tamed’.

Creative Insight

In each episode of Creative Insight, I invited two guests on to discuss their approaches to creativity. Whether two musicians, two podcasters, or two writers, I was keen to instigate a conversation between two creative people and discover the similarities and differences in their processes and thoughts on their craft. In this episode, I spoke to Helena Lönnberg and Clémence Patelli about making podcasts, studying and living abroad, and the experience of interviewing people about personal matters such as love and faith.

Hidden Gems

A light entertainment show, ‘Hidden Gems’ was a show that celebrated the unknown and the obscure. Complete with games, chat and news, this show invited new guests on each week to explore under-reported stories and niche knowledge in a panel-show style approach.

Guest on Jordan Maxwell-Ridgeway’s Arternative

Alongside my own radio projects, I was always delighted to be a guest on other shows. Here, I spoke on Jordan Maxwell-Ridgeway’s podcast ‘Arternative’ about the world of dance. In Jordan’s own words, in this episode: ‘We discuss contemporary dance, the gendered dynamics of ballet, Matthew Bourne’s groundbreaking Swan Lake, the amazing and controversial Sergei Polunin, robots doing ballet and Amy finally convinces me I have to go see the ballet!’
